Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacterium that can colonize the lining of the human stomach (gastric mucosa). Infection is often asymptomatic, but can sometimes cause gastritis and ulcers in the stomach or the first section of the small intestine (duodenum). An ulcer is a sore or a hole that forms in the mucosa, causing severe pain especially on an empty stomach.
