20 May 2020 - Gender differences and COVID-19
Many important gender differences are observed in frequency, symptoms and severity of several diseases, response to treatments and adverse reactions to medications. A gender-based approach to clinical practice can significantly contribute to health promotion by improving the appropriateness of care and, therefore, providing benefits for patients and the sustainability of the National Health System. This seems to be true also in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. With scientific support from the Gender Medicine Reference Centre of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), EpiCentro proposes a more in-depth review of these aspects to improve understanding of the aetiological and epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in men and women.
